YVTC MESA Students Study Olympic Park Institute - 4/11/2006

Elwha River Studied

Every summer YVTC MESA takes a lucky group of 24 Freshman from Pasco and Sunnyside High Schools. They spend a week studying the Elwha watershed. During the last century 2 dams were created that negatively impacted the Pacific Northwest’s wild life. The court’s finally decided that they should be taken down. Before the dams are removed in 2009, students have the opportunity to learn about salmon, steelhead and their environment.

Together, our students are helping the Elwha Science Education Project conduct field work and studies to prepare for the largest dam removal in the history of the United States. The experience is allowing the students the ability to address the Washington Grade Level Expectations (GLE’s) through hands on research and study.

If your kids are in these schools, keep a look out. We’ll be in the area recruiting for the summer.
